Elden Ring Nightreign: My Crater Event Shortcuts and Close Calls
Elden Ring Nightreign’s Crater Event turns Limgrave into a deadly lava trap—but daring shortcuts can win a legendary weapon before time runs out.
Elden Ring Nightreign doesn't just throw brutal bosses at you—it sometimes gives you a map that actively tries to kill you. I'm not talking about the storm either. I mean the Shifting Earth events, which start appearing after you defeat the first Nightlord, Gladius, Beast of Night (Tricephalos). When one triggers, whole sections of the map transform, and your run's success suddenly depends on how you handle the chaos. Of all the Shifting Earth events I've seen, the Crater Event is the one I both love and fear the most. A massive crack splits the centre of the map, lava bubbles at the bottom, and explosions shake the very fabric of Limgrave. It's terrifying. It's also the best event in the game, in my humble opinion.

The reward is what makes it worth the risk: a special smithing table at the bottom that lets you turn any one of your weapons into a legendary weapon. That's huge. But you've got limited time, numerous bosses blocking your descent, and a massive Magma Wyrm waiting to cut you in half. The usual route is slow and deadly. So what do you do? You yeet yourself off a nearby cliff and pray you land on a rock instead of drowning in lava. That's not a joke—that's the strategy.
If you're playing as Ironeye, things get slightly easier. His skill lets him lunge forward, and YouTuber eldencafor shared a shortcut where you jump off the cliff on the side of the Church near two Thorn Sorcerers. You need a quick cooldown on your skill, or a relic that grants +1 skill use, because you have to lunge twice to reach solid ground. I've tried it, and it works—but only if you time it perfectly. For those of us without a lunge and a bow, there's another, more deadly method. Go to the flight tree located north of the crater (near where the second-day boss usually spawns), catch an eagle over the lava pit, and then jump off just before it crosses over land. If you keep falling forward, you can make it to the Magma Wyrm boss. It sounds insane because it is.

Now let me warn anyone who attempts this: my friends and I did it in a moment of panic and weakness when we realised there wasn't enough time to reach the bottom by going the usual route. There's also a lot that can go wrong. If you mistime the drop, you either land on the cliff near the Black Blade Kindred or fall straight into the lava. Also, if you accidentally hit R3, the eagle will just drop you into the abyss. The first time we attempted this, one of my friends had an eagle drop him dead in the middle of the Crater despite him apparently not touching anything. That freaked my other teammate out—who tried to bail and also fell into the lava—which then confused me, and believe it or not? Straight into the lava I went. Since then I've managed to pull this little trick off, but I did so with randoms, which ended up causing the same amount of chaos as my teammates couldn't figure out how I went from the cliff edge down to the bottom of the other side of the Crater.
So for now, I think the only Crater skip I'll be sticking to is this relatively easy and safe one shared by That-Communication48, which takes you to the fog wall by the Fire Monks and Fire Prelate. It'll shave off a few minutes, and you'll still get some levels and a weapon after defeating these guys, so it's not a total waste of precious seconds. I could also just learn how to manage my time better, but this is a good backup.
Here's a quick comparison of the methods I've tried:
| Method | Difficulty | Risk | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ironeye lunge shortcut | Medium | Medium | Quick access to bottom |
| Eagle drop | High | Very high | Reach Magma Wyrm fast |
| Fire Monks skip | Low | Low | Safe progress, extra loot |
🔥 Pro tip: If you're going for the eagle method, make sure your whole team knows the plan. Otherwise, you'll end up like my squad—scattered, confused, and very dead.

Looking ahead to 2026, Nightreign's community is still finding new tricks, and the recent Tarnished Edition DLC has only added more gear to test. But the Crater Event remains one of the most thrilling—and punishing—experiences in the game. Whether you go for the Ironeye lunge, the eagle gamble, or the safer Fire Monks route, the key is to commit and pray. And maybe don't hit R3. 🦅🌋
